Rama Navami Story

In the Rama Navami legend, Kaushalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi were the three wives of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. However, none of them were capable of bearing a male child. The King wanted a child like this who could run the empire and be his heir. After a long marriage, neither of them was able to have children.

Later, the renowned Sage Vashistha suggested to the King that he perform the sacred Puthra Kameshti Yagna, which can bless one with children. Maharshi Rushya Shrunga was granted permission by King Dasharatha to carry out the Yagna in the most elaborate manner possible. The King was asked to divide a bowl of Payasam, a rice and milk dessert, among his wives. The King divided the bowl's candy evenly between his wife Kaikeyi and his wife Kaushalya. Sumitra received half of the food from these two wives. Kaushalya and Kaikeyi each had a son as a result of this unequal distribution of the holy Payasam. However, Sumitra gave birth to twin boys.

Ayodhya's celebrations reached their pinnacle on this day of glory. In addition to the royal family, everyone who lived there breathed a sigh of relief and thanked God for the miracle. They had no idea that Lord Rama, the newborn son of Kaushalya, was God himself presenting himself to them.

Significance of Ram Navami and Parade
